The Post-Festive Handloom Care Ritual: Preserving Pure Zari for Generations
Nine nights of perspiration, movement, and atmospheric dampness require mindful textile restoration. The atelier guide to airing, refolding, and mulmul wrapping.

The nine nights of Navratri are exhilarating, but rigorous dancing and crowded pandals subject fine handloom silks to perspiration, perfume residues, body oils, and friction. Rushing to fold and lock worn sarees back into a dark cupboard is the quickest way to ruin precious real zari and degrade delicate silk yarns.
The 4-Step Atelier Conservation Protocol
1. Air Thoroughly in Shade (Never Direct Sun)
Immediately after wearing, drape your saree across a clean wooden hanger or padded clothesline in a well-ventilated, shaded indoor room for at least 24 to 48 hours. Direct sunlight weakens silk proteins and fades botanical dyes; gentle ambient airflow evaporates body moisture naturally.
2. The Golden Rule of Stain Removal
Never spray water or rub vigorously on grease or food stains. Blot gently with an absorbent cotton swab. For stubborn stains, entrust the garment exclusively to a specialist dry cleaner experienced in handlooms—always instruct them explicitly: "Dry clean only, no petrol wash, no harsh roller iron on zari."
3. Change the Fold Lines Every 6 Months
Silk is an organic protein fibre. Leaving a heavy silk saree folded in the exact same creases for months will cause permanent stress fractures along the fold lines, eventually splitting the weave. Refold your sarees regularly, turning the inner folds outwards.
4. Wrap in Pure Mulmul Cotton
Plastic covers are the enemy of pure handlooms: they trap ambient humidity, generate static, and cause real silver-gilt zari to oxidise and turn black. Wrap each saree individually in unbleached white mulmul or pure cotton pillowcases, accompanied by natural neem leaves or cedar blocks (never chemical naphthalene balls).
Invest in Lasting Heirlooms
When cared for with love, an authentic handloom weave from Royal Creation will outlive generations, becoming a treasured family heirloom passed down with pride.
