Today, 11 October 2026, the sacred conch blows across homes and pandals as Sharad Navratri commences. The first day of the festival—Pratipada—is consecrated to Maa Shailaputri, daughter of the Himalayas and embodiment of pure, unadulterated nature. According to sacred tradition, her divine presence is invoked through pristine white, serene ivory, and warm champagne gold.
The Sacred Aesthetics of Ghatasthapana
The morning begins with Ghatasthapana: the sowing of sacred barley seeds in earthen pots and the lighting of the Akhand Jyot (eternal oil lamp). As the first rays of autumn sunlight touch the brass puja thali, the attire you wear should evoke purity, serenity, and quiet spiritual groundedness.
In classical handloom aesthetics, pure stark paper-white is softened into warm, tactile tones: cream, kora, unbleached tussar, and warm ivory. These shades carry organic texture and depth, reflecting the morning diya flames with a golden halo rather than harsh clinical brightness.
Styling the Day 1 Drape: The Poetry of Ivory Tussar
Tussar silk (also known as wild kosa silk) possesses a rich natural golden undertone and dry hand-feel that drapes with statuesque dignity. Draping an ivory Tussar saree for the morning puja requires minimal embellishment to shine:
- The Graceful Nivi with Flowing Pallu: Pin the pleats firmly at the navel and allow the embroidered bird and flora pallu to sweep across your left arm, resting naturally over your wrist during the aarti.
- Temple Gold Accents: Pair your ivory drape with antique matte temple jewellery—a guttapusalu necklace or antique gold bangles with ruby accents—which provides a striking warm contrast against the pale silk.
- Alta & Red Bindi: A crimson vermilion bindi on the forehead and traditional alta applied delicately on the fingertips and feet complete the auspicious festive countenance.
